Greetings from New Zealand - Great book Stu |
|
Stu and everyone.
Hi there from the shores of New Zealand. Found out about the book two weeks ago - priority posted it from Amazon and read it cover to cover in a night. Really like the mindset and approach of your writing style Stu - has that same positive vibe as Rebel without a Crew.
I'm currently in pre-production on a Spaghetti Western digital feature. I did my Masters in Creative Writing on the genre, and my PHD is about how digital narrative empowers creatives with storytelling - well least that's what it is this week.
My background prior to this year was as acadamic and industry persona in the areas of digital media. I am now involved with content creation for mobile phones which is ramping up to be a strong business model.
Alongside that is the intention - which has been there for the last couple of years to apply the DV Rebel mindset and go and shoot a feature length production. I tested the workflow back in 2004 with a short film titled Gundown but have mainly been focusing on my animation process titled VectorTV which was initially developed for web but looks even better on mobile phones - the pilot for the series of A Bullet Waits For You is on YouTube and the kewl thing about that is aside from the actors I completed all the elements, post, and animation by myself in a self sufficent manner and that is what I LOVE about digital.
The feature film project is ambitious, am currently doing the budget for an application to the Australian Film Commission where it will be shot, going to try and bring it in for under $50,000 and make it look like a couple of million more.
Anyway I would love to network with others - I feel so isolated over here at times.
Oh and if anyone is interested I will be blogging all the elements and script for all to see at:

Look forward to talking with everyone.
regards
Andrew

Hey Andrew!
It's good to hear from other filmmakers in strange places! (I am in the unexciting Midlands of the UK, meself). The DV Rebel approach really is the way to go for folks like us, because we just don't have huge production facilities around. Like Stu says, it can actually be an advantage to work outside of major production areas anyway - people (who might lend locations etc) still find movies exciting out here in the sticks.
Post some links to your films, mate! And best of luck with the feature.
Cheers,
Huw

Man is that true. Both things he said about being in Hollywood are true. The ability to call in favors and the unwillingness of locals to help out with locations and the like. Many times I certainly wish I were somewhere else.
Good luck with your projects, guys,

Cheers dude! I must say it was nice to move out of Hollywood and find people who were actually still enthusiastic about films (who weren't themselves filmmakers, that is). But still, damn, I do mss that fantastic LA weather. But I heard my favourite bar shut down (probably because I moved...) so there's one less reason to miss it, I suppose.

Hollywood is only good for finance, promotion and distribution. Those of us that live here have to work twice as hard to get locations casts and crew. I myself have a City of Gods type project I am going to shoot in Africa

What bar was shut down?
As for casting in LA, everyone here are out of work actors. Throw a rock and you'll hit one. Crews on the other hand are another story. Everyone works in the industry so the last thing they want to do is work for free ontheir day off.

True that.
It was Daddy's Bar on Vine, in between Hollywood and Sunset. A cool place and sadly missed.
