Film Look - pg. 275 |
|
Hello guyz,
Stu made these videos on YouTube and I have questions to ask...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx-VFalV39s
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g0R0_O9Dh4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIneW9sPPVg
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzU0q6m-gyg
In the DVRG book, he discussed acheiving the 'film look' using a film stock/color profile converter [pg. 275]. Now, with these tutorials he put up on YouTube, is he trying to say the color profile converter isnt necessary...'cos judging by the LOOKS of his correction, I dont think there is a need for a colour profile to be added
2ndly, Stu used the Colorista plug-in for the tutotrial but I have a glitch and that is, I dont have Colorista cos it is too expensive for me. All I have is Hue & Saturation, Levels and Curves plug-in which I think will handle the job. My questions is, how do you determine 'shadows', 'mid-tones' and highlights using the Levels plug-in. I mean, how do you know whcich colour channel to pull for shadows, mid-tones and highlights as compared to Colorista that has dedicated buttons [carats] for this purpose.
10KS guyz, I hope to read from some1 soon...

You can afford Colorista Free... Cause it's free My film "Leap: Rise of the Beast" was the first feature film to use the free version for everything. For power windows and such, you use two copies of a layer and mask it

Yeah, once they released Colorista II, the took the original, removed the power windows (hence the workaround I gave you) and released it as Colorista Free. It's in their downloads section. Completely free!

Whats Up El...loaded Colorista Free and I am experiencing one problem and that is...how do you move those wheels with your mouse...kinda confusing..
Also...will Colorista allow for an external hardware like Color Finesse does... At least if I cant afford the a Da Vinchi system, I shud be able to experience it with Colorista
I hope to read from you guyz soon...

Hi, KK,
For help in how the wheels work, check out the tutorials. Good stuff there!
Currently no hardware support for Colorista, but there is a way to rig up trackballs, or at least there used to be. Do a web search, or I think there is an article on ProVideo Coalition.
You can also get the Davinci experience for free with Resolve.

Depending on you computer, you may not be able to drag the buttons. Instead click on the areas of the wheels where you want the adjustment to go and that should work. If you still think you need to use Curves, here's a tip. To get the "Hollywood" look of teal/orange, bring up the curve for the red channel and make an "S" shape. This pulls red out of the shadows (making teal) and adds red to the highs (more orange). You can also use the plugins that come with the Guide as they'll give you some finer control for CCing
