I didn't use any of the techniques mentioned in that tutorial. The track was 2D. I had the person in the footage stay really still as I filmed my camera moving around him. The footage was overcranked to 60p. I then stabilized it, tracked the muzzle hole, and applied a still of a muzzle flare over the barrel. I duplicated a smoke element, and crossed it in the form of an "X" so that it seems 3D. The muzzle flare incorporated a shot from the front, and from the side. They were placed next to each other to also create a 3D look.

That's working great! True garage VFX. I like the way the heat ripples appear to exist in 3D space...
