Canon 500D -> Sony HVR-Z1 **Equivlent Focal Lengths**
Hi guys, hope somone can help me with this.
I want to go to a location with a couple of mates as stand in actors (for working out marks/framing angles only) and plan out my shoot using a Canon 500D for still images, and then use these to build up a story board and decide what focal lengths to use for each shot when it comes to shooting with the Sony HVR-Z1.
Can anybody tell me how to work out what the equivlent focal lengths on the Sony would be to my Canon 500D SLR?
i.e if I took a picture at 24mm on my 500D what focal lenght would I need to set on the Sony to get the same shot?
Cheers in advance

It's a little bit of math, but here it goes.
Crop factor of 500d = 1.6
Crop factor of Z1u 1/3" sensor = 7.2
So you need to plug in some numbers and do some basic algebra:
So as an example we'll use a 35mm lens on our 500d:
1.6*35 = 7.2*Sonyfocallength
(56) = 7.2 * Sonyfocallength
(56)/(7.2) = Sonyfocallength
7.78 = Sonyfocallength
So set your Z1u somewhere between 7 and 8 (closer to and you'll be about equal.
Keep in mind your sensor dimensions are not quite equal so you'll be in the ballpark with this calculation but you won't be exact.
Good luck

Thank you very much for taking the time to explain.
I'm pretty sure I can use your workings now to work out the other lenghts i'll need
