The Mother Tongue
Since the nuances of language are part of our toolkit, I thought I would recommend this book by Bill Bryson on the history of the English language. I was reading the first chapter yesterday, and I had to keep stopping to read portions out loud to my wife.
Definitely the mark of an interesting author!
Lots of witty observations and insights are going to keep THE MOTHER TONGUE at the top of my gift-giving list for this holiday season.
And I could see it as a hilarious documentary, traveling around the world to explore the history and use of English historically and in the modern world. I wonder if the rights are available?
Bonus point: I now know the word for "beer" in Welsh is cwrw, and it is pronounced "koo-roo".
