Cool short Hype!

Congrats on making the finals.

I can tell you winning an HVX is a pretty cool feeling. Wink

Hope you snag it.

Haven't had time to watch all the finalists yet but yours is the standout so far.

When do they announce?

thanx Jack & srproductions!

I guess they'll announce the winner next Monday or Tuesday.

Jack - you won a HVX?

its interesting, people in the forum over there are REALLY upset about the "popular" votes getting to the finals. They feel it was a popularity contest, and it should have been confined to people who were members BEFORE the contest began. In my limited experience, when someone holds a contest like that and announces it all over the place (I learned about it at a MGLA meeting here in LA), the whole POINT is publicity, to get new members, to make people aware of the site and get people to sign up. This contest did that perfectly.

Yeah I won an HVX with "Rekindled" and some other stuff over at DVXuser.

As for the popularity thing - I think that's up to each contest.

The DVXuser contests only allow votes by forum members who have 100 posts at the time of voting.

But I did the SciFi / Sundance Exposure fest and the Sundance site even said "come back again and vote tomorrow" lol.

So they were trying to drive traffic to their site and were making the contest super capitalistic just like istock - or so it sounds.

But DVXuser is a smallish close nit community like this one (rebelsguide) is becomming and they want it to be about the film and the feedback you get.
So
- you cannot vote if you don't have either 100 posts or you are entered in the contest
- you cannot promote your film outside DVXuser
- even though the prizes are really good sometimes, they don't announce what they are until weeks before the upload date, so only people who are really motivated make films for each contest.

So I think it's up to the contest. If istock just has an open door policy on who can vote and I am sure one of the reasons they are doing this is to drive traffic. Then boohoo for filmmakers that did not get off their bums and go promote the hell out of their movie.

If you go to non-virtual film festival you cannot complain when someone else's movie gets picked up and your's doesn't if they were flyering their asses off while you sat back with a "my film speaks for itself" attitude.

So screw those guys - hope you win Exclamation

BTW the current contest over there SPYFEST openned up to all cameras, rather than just DVX and HVX. So you should check out their fests even if you don't win. The contest is not open (1st week in June) but people have already started discussion threads for their films in progress:
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=103
Heck, there's two weeks left if any one feels like rushing something together. Prizes have not been announced. They have ranged from a box of tapes, to jibs, to HVX'es in the past Smile Grab bag, baby.

hahaha.. thanx! you made alot of good points, and i agree with you. The rules said nothing except you have to sign up to vote, so I tried promoting mine online as much as possible.

congrats on winning your HVX! I'm downloading Rekindled now, and will watch more of your stuff.

yeah, i read about SPYFEST over there. I'm not sure if I'll enter. I'm not usually big on these online contests, and I'm not even a member at dvxuser. But maybe, who knows. If an idea strikes me. Smile
I'm sure whatever the prizes are, they're useful!

Wonder if Stu has thought about hosting some DV Rebel contests here...

I definitely like how DVXuser limits voting to users with 100+ post count. I joined DVXu just before voting started on HeroFest and while I could have pushed my post count to make voting, I didnt want to briceman my way in. I watched a number of entries and Bonehand is still one of my favorite shorts. I think the only way it can really be fair is if somehow voters are required to watch all the entries. If not, then it will always be the JDSs that get viewed and not the new guys. I haven't even watched any of the other fests as I've been too busy on my project. I did watch some bizarre thing about how long a guy can faddiddle himself in his office. Very disturbing. (Good short, though.)

I wouldnt enter a DVXu fest unless I became Mr. Popular over there, and considering the most I do over there is get banned, I guess it wont happen. I seriously considered a SpyFest entry, but I'm too busy.

Anyway. Great to have you here, Jack. Did you read Stu's book? Quite the read.

There is definitely a lot of truth in what you say. But - 3rd place in Horrorfest was unknown, 1st place in Drama Fest, 1st, 3rd, and 4th in SciFest, 2nd (me, unknown at the time) in Zombie Fest. So the unknowns can and do rise from the field.

BUT, there is a lot of truth in what you say. What can be done about it? Anonymous entry. Barring that becoming a rule, well known members could voluntarily enter under fake names to take the focus off them - to become the new guy as it were. Just a thought. Hmmm I wonder ...

I am reading it now. That is how I found the forum. Awesome stuff. I am already thinking about re-writing my feature based on it. We've scripted hundreds of vampire minions. I'm rewritting the minions to be more anonymous with rubber creature gloves protruding from black monk / holocaust cloaks so I can clone them and have hundreds of them with only 4 or 5 actors the way Stu clones the Swat team in the book.

I have never used After Effects and I am loving the book. I think it is going to be a real bible for rebel filmmaking.

Now speaking of stealing too much attention - sorry for the threadjack Hype, back to you.

The bones looked great. Rekindled was so expensive (for me) but I looked at some of those packages and couldn't afford them.

The camera effect was cool too. Did that implement a stock element from istock. If not what were your stock elements (sorry if that's been discussed).

And does anyone know how to do spell check around here? I cannot figure it out on this forum.
EDIT: ah ok, I see, it is always on.

Jack. I have allways wondered what makes people want to make a movie about tourchering another human being. I watched rekindeled and was wandering what the facination is. I love sifi and i know there are some people who think they are less than a real movie. I could expain what i like about them and defend them. I was just interested to her what it is that you like about the ultra gore/ vilence. I am not tring to type cast you. Maybe this was just a story you wanted to tell and it needed to be told that way.

Hey man, good question.

But to not "Jack" hype's thread any further I started a new one for Rekindled:
http://rebelsguide.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=333
Where I give you an answer that is probably about half a page longer than you care to read Smile

Any other questions about my stuff hit me up in the Rekindled thread or if it is for another short start a thread for that one and I will be more than happy to share about my stuff and give other answers that are too long to read. Very Happy

Keep us posted hype!

Sorry Hype for the distraction.

Your movie was great, but even better than being cool it was inspiring. I was talking to my wife a few days ago about how I wish I knew someone who knew massive amounts of stuff about AE. Then I joined this site and wow. I just wanted to let you know I appreciate your time and effort. You could have just responded to our questions with I have a lot of experience, or something like that. I think it is cool that you took the time to put up screen shots, and links to your tutorials.

Hype,

I really enjoyed your short. Nice work. I wish you the best on the contest.

As a fellow Rebel in Los Angeles please let me know if you need any help on future projects. I'm finishing color grading and VFX on a short right now, but if I'm available I'm always looking to collaborate. Again, great job!

Paul

that's so crazy, cuz just yesterday I was telling my After Effects how I need to spend less time with it and more time looking for a wife! Laughing just playing...

seriously, though, your more than welcome. If you ever have any AE questions, feel free to ask. Smile If I know the answer, I'll certainly help out!

Also, if anyone has any ideas for specific AE tutorials, please let me know. I have a big list and try to do them when I have time or if I think they show something really cool. I certainly don't know everything about AE, but I'm happy to share what I do know.

And I'll post the results of the judges voting as soon as it's announced on Monday!

I got 2nd place in the "Not Funny" category!!

Not bad at all! I didn't win the HVX200, but i DID win a PD170, which is a million times better than the camera I have now!!

They sent me a little questionairre last week when they informed me about winning, and when asked about making the movie, of course I mentioned the Guide. With 2 of the judges being editors (or something) for video magazines (Digital Video & Videomaker), maybe it will end up being printed and the Guide will get some word-of-mouth advertising for free!
