Post Do you use Squarespace? Reply with quote
I've been looking into making my own web site to promote myself as a photographer (so I can get paid), yet I know nothing about html and all that jazz. Of course I will need a site that will look at least close to professional. Would using Squarespace be a good alternative to go through and painstakingly learn html?

Stu just switched his blog to squarespace from blogspot and I think he likes it so far. If you want to PAY, it seems like a nice option, but if you dont, I think blogspot is a decent free-ness. Tons of templates out there.

Well I'm not really looking for a blog. I'm looking for an actual website for business purposes.

It doesn't have to be a traditional "blog". Use what it has to do what you want. I am a ten year professional photographer and I considered using blogspot - I'm just too lazy to put ANY website together. Blog spot can do it, but not if you think in typical "blog" fashion. Its a website with alot of formatting tools. If you format it like it's just a blog, then that's what you'll have. And alot of people use not only blogs, but Blogspot for "business purposes".

I would recommned renting your own server. Long term you'll benefit more & you'll be in total control with unlimited databases., ftp access, emails etc...
I use 1&1 virtual server, but I'm sure there are many decent hosting companies out there.

Next step would be the design. Here's a A photography & multimedia portfolio theme for Wordpress
Wordpress boasts the "famous" 5 minute installation, great for beginners.

Just an idea...

great suggestion rodisgod.

wordpress is great, you dont really need to know how to read code but it helps a lot if you do.

i use wordpress daily and can vouch for its stability and ease of use.

squarespace looks great too, and i have heard some good things. looks pretty darn customizable too.

i say if you can make something work for you with squarespace, go for it dude...

and report your findings.

So I don't need to know anything about html to use WordPress?

Technically it's XHTML, but that's not a concern yet it's essentially the same. So to answer your question I would say no you don't need these skills to use Wordpress.
Having said that they'd be useful when customizing the design.

The content you show on frontpage would be done in admin control panel & similar to the TAGS used here at the Café:

i.e insert image

format font & colour etc....

It's not straightforward foolproof, but anyone willing to learn could master Wordpress with all the online documents & fellow rebel help Wink

Iv'e got a domain about to expire, so I just set a Wordpress up using that photography theme for you to look at [REMOVED].
I just googled b/w images & threw them up, Ive not quite figured the themes display options yet. Enough to give you the gist though.

I'll PM you the login details if you want, go take a look at the wordpress dashboard before commiting yourself on your new venture.

Do your worst Razz

Ok let me know how you get on, do your worst - I'll delete it when your done anyhow.

I'm not to keen on the theme myself, it looks simple enough but a pain to configure!
