Here's a link to a short that I posted on the internet.

I'm not sure what I did wrong, but maybe someone here can advise.

Basically the video stops very briefly every fifth frame, and then continues.

Any tips?

Trey

Probably what happened -
you didn't remove the pull down, to get 24p onto a tape that only records at 29.976 frames per second it adds a pull down pattern of 3 progressive frames and then 2 interlaced frames, If your in AE go to interpret footage and choose "guess pulldown"
to remove the pulldown.

Thanks, man.

But I'm on an iMac with Final Cut Studio 2.

I'll run some tests this week to make sure I get it down.

Thanks again!

You can use Compressor on the Mac to remove the pulldown. It comes with Final Cut Studio and it even does batch processing!

Thanks, Boz.

I actually did use Compressor, but I'm trying to figure out what I did wrong.

This is the workflow I use for pulldown on the Mac side...

Boz,

Thanks a lot, man.

This is the exact same page that I refer to as well.

Normally it works, but I'm doing something wrong, so I need to run some tests.

Take care,

Trey

Hi Trev - just a question in case you're overlooking something simple - you're not running the clip through compressor after you've edited it right? because that will screw up the cadence and Compressor won't be able to remove the pulldown, you need to run the raw clips before you cut them. (Sorry if that is overly obvious to you, not sure at what level you're at).

I'm glad you said that because I really think that could be it.

For some reason I read that it was a problem to remove pulldown after fades and cross dissolves are added. I was under the impression that general cutting was cool though.

Definitely makes sense how that could create a problem with the cadence.

Thanks a lot, man!

Okay, I've been running some tests over the past few hours. Your above suggestion doesn't seem to be the problem unfortunately.

I'm wondering if I caputred improperly. I'm going to look into that...

well another question then - you're in Final Cut right? if you set the canvas at 100% (only at 100% does fc display both fields), and you scroll through frame by frame do you see 3 progressive frames and then 2 interlaced frames? if so then you do have a 2:3 pulldown and compressor should be able to remove it.

Did you capture it as 29.976? you can't capture it as 24, you must capture it as 29.976.

Yes sir,

I captured at 29.976. And yes I am using FCP 6.0.? Compressor has removed my pulldown successfully in the past. I'm not sure what's going on with it now, but God willing I'll find out.

Thanks for sticking around for me,

Trey

well then perhaps the file itself has a problem, try some other footage, if Compressor successfully removes the pulldown, that would point towards some corruption of the file, try re-capture. If Compressor fails on other footage, Compressor itself may be corrupted, points toward re-installing just Compressor.

Yeah I tried to re-capture some other footage and I had the same problem.

It looks like I may have to try re-intstalling just compressor. Or maybe it's time to trash my preferences.

Thanks for helping out!

Trey
