what books did you read on directing? anything that you found pivital in your education? Did you read the Judith Weston books or anything? |
not many books on directing really. Tons of commentaries and interviews over the years, and of course endless hours of movies.
When I was younger I used to read Rebel without a crew over and over, because it demystified making a movie. Recently Stu's book was full of practical ideas and tips, which empowered me a little in areas i felt under educated. But overall i find books on directing/writing to be very useless because they're usually written by people who would be directing/writing if their advice was actually useful.
I've read countless books on director's and writer's i love though.

Ayz,
Just watched it and bravo. Well directed, scored and edited.
I noticed at the end you thank MacGregor - did he actually help out on the shoot?

No not the shoot -- but Mac's a friend, and always very helpful in answering my endless questions regarding technical stuff. The Guy's insanely talented too.

As far as the acting goes, all that hard work you put into it paid off. Big time.

I'm a little late to this thread, but let me say THANK YOU AYZ for sharing your work. I've been waiting to check this film out ever since I saw the trailer that Stu posted on the pro lost blog. I'm downloading the movie as I type this so I have yet to watch it, but I'm excited to see how it turned out! Thanks for posting up your before and after CC pics as well very cool stuff.
I'll be back to let you know what I thought of the movie.
Again thanks Ayz.

Amazing |

Ayz, I posted on Vimeo after watching the film, but I wanted to post here as well. Holy crap you're an amazing talent. You mentioned that you have been doing this for awhile, what is your background? I make television and radio commercials for my day job, so I at least have a playground to test out shooting styles and effects...how much testing did you have to do to get your color concepts just right?
I've watched this film now several times and have emailed other people I know to check it out. Great work!

It was a couple of days, whenever i could find time. Went to the location, tested out the shots and lighting at various settings (exposure, cinemode vs tvmode, shutter speeds, etc), and then brought into vegas and started to try out things that I had in mind. That was probably the best time I could've spent in preparing for the short, because it made me understand what I needed to keep an eye on while shooting and also gave me new ideas.
Plus, i was able to shot the actors/crew the test footage, to assure them how it would look in the end.

Just goes to show you... |

The best advice I ever received regarding shooting any video is that preplanning makes all the difference. Your film is definitely evidence of that. Just goes to show you that the best investment a rebel filmmaker can make is time. Thanks for the answer.

Ayz - any developments on the topic of sound design? Did you use a boom, etc etc... |
Haven't been able to get a hold of my sound guy, but working on it. Will have details soon.

What kind of tripod are you using Ayz? I read a heavy one you put in the car during the running shot.
Also, did you shot in 1080i or 720p with the HV20? Maybe this differs, cause you have an ntsc hv20. And what about the lost frames in anamorphic instead of 16:9 aspect ratio (how much is that by size?)

It's a fluidhead "velbon" -- I think is the companies name. Can't remember model # or anything. It's basic, but gets the job done.
Shot 1080, and there were no lost frames -- unless your talking about resolution? In which case, yeah you lose a little if you plan to blow it up... but I knew i was going to 720p, which meant I had more than enough resolution.
Sorry, maybe i misunderstood the question though. Hope that helps anyway.

Probably the DV-7000 It feels great to read that you achieved this film with tools at the lower end.
What is the aspect ratio if you intend to go anomorphic (like 16:9)? And what was your workflow for cropping your footage after capturing?
On my HV20 packaging it reads 1080i. Does anybody know if only the US model records 1080p?

What makes this short look so expensive is both the great sound, but even more the extremely well executed and smooth camera moves, with the occasional Bourne Identity-style handheld when called for. Can you tell us a bit more about how you did the dolly tracking shots, etc?
"What makes Spielberg Spielberg is that he knows exactly where to place the camera." I don't remember who said that, but it reminded me of your work in this movie. Well done.
