keep it coming monkey, you're making me want to buy a house with a big shed, although it's gonna blow my filming budgets all to hell Sad

Post day two Reply with quote
day two had some help from the director, got most of the bulking out and a lot of skinning we will skip fiberglass as its too much for this.
As for design it was us watching a crap load of space ship scenes etc but with the time money etc we can only go so far. But we did a bunch of thumbnails and two rough sketches. I dont recomemend you do that on your first one, plan it out. i sort of can just riff it as but its not a good way to work.

this start to show the direction we will go with it i think

we finished late so we shot a few outside...

day job is a lot of things, free lance artist, red camera renter, concept artist, production designer etc.
right now im doing a huge garden sculpture and this space ship plus dealing with the red camera rentals.
some very old work is here...

day two done, three days to go.

ok, so most of the blocking is done, detail is being added every where..

were covering it in primer as we get to this stage, this is when you start to dig what your working on, at this point you can start to see the final look, not there yet, but close.

the hole in the side is for a back lite logo that will be added at the lighting stage.

once again it got late so we got a few after dark shots, but we also have started to add the second tone of paint here too

ok so we have more detail to add and some shape on the other side to balance out the over all shape, painting, lights and logos. But only a few days left, might be shooting red/Si tommorrow so there might be a day missing and back to it on monday.

Heres a photoshop work up for the lighting....

Splendid work. Thanks for all of this.

I take it that the prop, when complete, will remain in the primer stage, with all color being applied in post?

No there will be a painting stage. While it wont be crazy colours but similar more muted tones it will have more definition then this. This will use some air brushing and dry brushing, plus various aging paints such as a two part pantina and a film style rust water based rust/aging spray paint.

http://www.hollynorth.com/store/product.php?productid=4762&cat=28&page=1
http://search.ebay.com/airbrush

I use primer at this stage as a sort of extra glue and to see what im building.

on large things such as ships, crreatures etc a more muted palete suggests the larger size.
But having said that this ship is 1/35 scale so there can be some detail in the paint. Some examples of ideas in that area.

both of these vans paint look is great! aged but not insane amounts.

this is close to size and paint style were looking at, but slightly more metal and aging.

notice how different fallowing this would be. super clean and lots of colour and crome. even if you didnt know what this was IE no obvious scale cue you could guess by the colours its relative size.

vs say this...total aging

Also think who is this ship for? what does it do? say transports a baron vs garbage scowel.
On the other hand what would a garbage scowel that was clean say? vs a broken down barons ship? Just food for thought...

just more detail nearing the end now. We added a day as today was just a few hours. so one more day of detail, cutting in lights, then final detail and painting.

comments?

The front end looks like it has a monitor on it. Since this is for a video are you planning on comping footage onto it? That would be cool looking.

I can't stress enough how cool I think this is.

painting. The director rethought the bright red ship and we were back to the orginal idea of alien, aliens, aliens 4 and event horizon for ship paint style.

we sprayed primer in several layers as we went along as a base, then to start the painting we did a matte scenic paint in black for the undercoat.
next dry brushed several layer of silver.

next added rust and age spray paints, two part pantinas of a base iron to a green, blue and rust

lastly added a flat 30 % grey in a soft brushing and sprayed a thin mist of grey primer.

we added a little of the rustall system paints by using the number two black wash here and there, plus add a few more highlights of silver.
tommorrow lights and little airbrush and where ready to shoot friday. The shoot got pushed a day so were going to look over the paint work in a fresh light, add a little black around the engines, a few detail paints etc. Total cost is about 130 dollars canadian, for foam, paint, styrene, zap glue, etc.
If it looks ok here in the shitty garage light it will look better in the real lighting.
