same, ive been a huge fan of models. im of the generation that saw the orginal star wars. I got into CGI until lord of the rings and fell back in love with this method. i find it to be a more personal image and quite cheap. I love that every thing in the shot is real in a sense and that i made it.

I did production design and miniatures for a movie which is coming out soon called "blood a butchers tale" starring arron douglas of BSG.
here some WIPS from that, please remember these are shots we didi in the model shop not finals in any way....also model work done by owen [kotos] simpson

The evil grinder....made from junk like fuit boxes and old hard drives.

this model was built at 1/4 scale for testing model size. you can see the light coming thought the ceiling as the cover for it wasnt finished when we shot this test still.

this store has a open space in the center for the stuff we shot on set against greenscreen.teh out side will be digital and the blue area is also digital.

butcher shop set.....

with look test...

this shot is the wrong backround you can see the angles off but again these where from tests.

All done at 1/12 th for the doll house furniture which is great stuff. all made with the cheapo foam from home depot

Again please remember these are just WIP shots the movie should look 100 times better..[/img]

Amazing stuff. God, I love models. I was just ranting to a friend of mine the other day how much I hate CGI (in most cases).

Seriously, those look awesome. Amazing.

Len thanks a lot.
I dont hate CGI theres thing it can do that is unequalled. I would never in million years want to go to back to celluloid nor optical comps. I used after effects to comp in my actor to the shots at the top.
I think for back round and say 10000 troops how else could you do it on a budget? for that check out the article at fxguide on attia, amazing!!!

PLease if any one else is doing this kind of thing please post your work up here!!!

This is the next phase for me in miniatures, I took a still of this maquette model we where using for look ideas and some stills of practical prop tables from on set and made a digital set and props in google sketch up using the image modelling tool. I really want to work more on this idea...
the look of models but the control of digital....so sweet.

these two test movies were done in the same way from stills made into digital models in sketch up....

this was a panorama of a alley i took and made into a fake camera move ignore the crappy drone its just there for test purposes...

Again if any ones trying stuff like this please post here, i want to see what others are trying.

babe in lingerie is Jennifer Sciole, and the vampire guy is played by Kim Coates whos done a ton of stuff. but more importantly its the WRONG backround. f*****g outsourced CGI....! NEVER AGAIN!!
But was a cool production design and miniature build job.

trailer for "Blood a Butchers tale" is here...http://www.bloodabutcherstale.com/media.php?page=trailers

Cant say enough as well for the work done on all this stuff by Owen [kotos] simpson. The guy was sent from the future to make miniatures in the past.

I love to see miniatures being used. I don't hate CGI, but I think it's overused. It has its place, but in many cases it should not be replacing miniatures. I think most cases, as in LotR, call for a synthesis between Minis and CGI. But minis make a great effect. Return of the Jedi looks a hundred times better than any of the prequels. Miniatures are just more organic. It's like comparing CD's to Vinyl.
