Post Summer Camp Items Reply with quote
I'm writing a script where the main character (12 yo) is heading off to summer camp. So I was looking to stir up some of the items you would bring to a summer camp with you from around your room. So come take a trip into the past with me and, if you will, help me think of some items, important to you or just necessary items, to bring with you to camp, or perhaps a trip to the cottage or maybe just moving out somewhere for a while.

I took some fake blood, liquid latex, tubing, and a pump and didnt give the nurses office a moment's rest. But that's just me.

Aside from that, my usual camp setup, when I was 12, was (lol) a Walkman, clothes, toiletries, sleeping bag, and a Swiss Army knife. Oh... and a Sh-load of condoms.... I wish. Rolling Eyes The Swiss Army Knife was less for survival stuff and more for the fact that I could use it to modify my camper wristband so I could sneak into any camp and not get kicked out when they check my arm.

"What? This is the 'girl's side'? I didnt know that. I'm not with the camp. My parents have a cabin right over there..."

List for today's camper, aside from the basics:

Ipod
Cellphone
Laptop
Airline bottles of Liquor
"Leatherman" tool knife
And condoms. Seriously. Times are different than when I was that age.

Does the story center around the camp, ala Meatballs, Lil Darlings, or Camp Nowhere? Or does it only factor in slightly to the overall story?

The reason I ask is that, obviously, your character will determine what he brings to the camp. As will your story. Is he a good kid that just brings the basics? Is he the party kid that brings the liquor and condoms? Or is he the.... uh.... fun kid... Rolling Eyes ....that brings Makeup FX to mess with counselors and camp staff?

If the story takes place at the camp, remember you will have all of these types. And you'll have to sports guys and all the typical school stereotypes. Each year I had a personal little theme - whether it was the Makeup stuff, or electronic stuff I could make simple alarms out of and hide around camp. If it centers around a camp, you'll have alot of fun creating the different groups and then individuals in the groups. Although I would tend to draw the line at the campers bringing ridiculous amounts of things just to create a story.

I guess it would depend on what type of kid went to summer camp. For example a rich kid could have everything including a maid/manservant and the kitchen sink. A kid who is keen on summer camp would have all the necessities for survival (whether needed or not). The poor kid would arrive with hardly anything except clothing/a bedroll and a baseball glove and ball (prized possessions). The troublemaker kid would arrive hair slicked back. teeshirt, jeans, boots, swichblade (or other concealable weapon) and an attitude (along with the probation officers warning that this kid should be fed to the bears at the most opportune moment).
The boy/girl scout would be the most prepared of the lot. items would include: compass, survival kit complete with fishing line and hooks, matches, a topographical map of the area, insect repellant, bear repellant, snake repellant, a first aid kit, a survival manual and a be prepared attitude.
Mind you I only surmise that this is what various people would take to camp, having seen the aforementioned camp movies, plus Camp Runamuck, The Parent trap, Troop Beverley Hills, and The Great Escape... Very Happy

These days I wouldn't be surprised if they confiscated 3/4 of the things a boy scout would carry as a matter of course.

You can always find charcoal at camp, so don't forget the saltpetre and sulfur.

I guess what they're saying is that it should reveal things about the character what they bring, and even what they don't bring, and the things they try to bring which get confiscated...
