EOSHD is reporting that the latest GH2 hack lets you shoot with the AVC Intra codec, which means no more long GOP or interpolated frames. This is huge since the other cams that use this are apparently very expensive and shoot on P2 cards

On the downside, you must use very fast cards as you are recording at 176 Mbps, more or less. And one minute record time is about 1 gig of card space.

So any GH2 owners out there hacked their cameras yet? What results?

Disclaimer: I have 3 hacked GH1s that I love, and I just bought a GH2 on eBay that hasn't arrived yet.

Ok, got GH2. Hacked it. Re-hacked it for new 12,000 ISO option. Had mind blown.

Shooting with nothing but moonlight last week. Pretty grainy, like super 8 grainy, but definitely usable in some situations.

You can see some lowlight footage (not 12000iso) on the homepage of my website, a quickie video shot/cut for local United Way with two GH1s and a 2. Rapper was lit by 2 300w fresnels, crowd and dancers lit by blinking traffic lights and street/ambient lights. No CC or NR. ISO1600, F4 on crowd shots.

Lenses were Noktor 50mm F.95, Panasonic 20mm F1.7, Panasonic 14-42mm F3.5.

Will post ISO120000 frame grab later.

Got it hacked. After sifting through hundreds of posts about the hack, settled on the 66Mbit/48Mbit Hack. Very stable. Fills up the SD card quickly, so switching to 48Mbit. The dual bit rate feature is handy.

ISO 12,800 Frame Grab, Lumix 14-42mm. Noisy at ISO 12,800. ISO 6400 - 10,000 is usually fine for most things in the city. Haven't tried any other lenses yet.

Update: This was shot in Cinema Mode. In Manual Mode, I can get a brighter image with less noise. Kit lens is slow @ F3.5 -5.6

Thanks heaps for sharing man. Perfect test shot! With a Neat Video and grain layer this would be completely usable IMO. So impressed with the work the guys have done to push the GH2 and GH1.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with Very Happy

Dark Alley, now not so dark with ISO 12,800, using Lumix 14-45mm instead of 14-42mm

Post Are those video frame grabes or stills? Reply with quote
Impressive, but I would want to see a video frame grab - 24p, 1/48th shutter, f5.6 if possible. Any chance you could do one of those?

These are video frame grabs. Although not much motion! The first shot of the container yard is F5.6, 24p, ISO 12,800. The alley shot f3.5,24p, ISO 12,800.

Other than the low light feature of the hack, motion is improved at higher bitrates than the GH1.

I only have used the kit lens so far, will try some faster lenses soon.

Phillip Bloom Christmas Shootout

The hacked GH2 holds up well to Canon's CS300. Check the comments: i.e.

Thanks Philip. Again this is invaluable. Another WOW for the tiny hacked and modest GH2... The C300 also blew me away, but in THIS test, the Panasonic sure acts like a $20k camera. Of course the others should be better in low light but for other stuff i can't wait for part 2.
