Hi, first time posting, long time reader. Thanks to Stu and his fantastic book, I got the kick in the pants needed to finally start learning AE. It's pretty amazing the amount of knowledge I acquired in the last 4 months, not only from Stu's book, but also by reading this forum every day. Oh! and Andrew Kramer's tutorials and Mark Christiansen's book too. I'm very happy to finally find a complement to the teachings of my hero Robert Rodriguez.

But hey, I guess you saw that trailer for the new J.J. Abrams project: http://youtube.com/watch?v=YzfNQkwwT3c

It reminds me of the panicky War-of-The-Worlds-type of stuff. I love that. May remind bad memories for some, though.
Anyway, does anybody here have some inside info about this shoot and VFX work ? It's very intriguing.

Eric

I also heard the whole handycam thing was true, and while I hate when Hollywood uses technology as an excuse to make shitty consumer pictures (Miami Vice, etc...), this is different in the style of Blair Witch, since the whole film is to be presented to us as if it someone found a DV camera on the ground, after the whole thing was over, rewound the tape, and pressed PLAY....

The trailer seems to show this, with a birthday party being the first thing on the tape.

So... while I don't know if I'll like it or not, at least this movie has an EXCUSE for making shitty consumer images. Smile

In the '80s, when shaky cam first became popular in commercials, I invented a fanciful camera rig that had a series of weights with holes drilled off-center and motorized axles on the x and y axes. You could adjust the speed of the rotation and have as much or as little shake as you wanted.

If I'd ever built it I probably would have won an Academy Award for tecnical innovation Very Happy

wasn't "28 Days Later" shot on a Canon XL1? I'm pretty sure it was. I remember reading they had to do alot of sky replacements. I also remember reading about the conversion to 35mm film process.

sorry, i know, a bit off topic. Reading the posts (about the handheld stuff) I just got to thinking about consumer equipment and techniques being used in widely released movies, and this just popped into my head, and i typed before I really thought about it where i was typing it. Again, sorry. I'm going back to lurking...

It's an HVX. Look at where the handle meets the camera body. That's what really gives it away. On the DVX that bit is shaped differently.

Keep an ear to IBC happening this week in Amsterdam.
