i recently bought dv rebels guide, and learnt a lot from the color correction section.
but what i found is that all the steps, like deartifacting, optimizing, film look, etc..
as described by you can be achieved with the magic bullets suite.
but still, i am not quite sure...like what plugin i should use for the different steps.
can u please tell me the appropriate plugins that i should use to get the same effects
like ur custom made scripts can achieve, so that i can use the magic bullets suite that
i invested in?
1.remove dv artifacts (M B frames i guess)
2.optimize the shot
3.relight and change object color
4.gradients, diffusions
5.vignetting
6.color corrections.
my film school project is coming, so please let me know this quickly.
thanks..

Let me get this straight, you're in film school and you bought Magic Bullet Suite?
I think your only problem is that you have much more than you need for what you're trying to do.
1. not sure i would use the free script that comes with the book, its fine
2. optomize is nothing specific, it means finishing the image, sharpening, color, ect.
3. relight - masks and curves. make sure ur working in 16 or 32 bit
4. come with after effects.
5. come with after effects.
6. okay for CC...you can use curves and levels. but if you really want to buy something, colorista is pretty awesome.
i think that answered your question?
but as stu said, film school, i dont know i may be wrong...but i doubt your going to make anything worthwhile for using this kind of post production. this stuff takes more then a second.
its film SCHOOL because you should learn how to do stuff right so you dont NEED to relight in post. learn about on camera filters and gradients.

hey stu...don't get me wrong...i am a great fan of T L B Card...after seeing ur film i thought of doing some indie work. and being in a film school doesn't necessarily give you ready producers willing to invest millions...so ur book is a bible to me, and i mean it. please help me out. yes, i will get enough lighting during my shoot, but still, things may go wrong...
you should learn how to do stuff right so you dont NEED to relight in post.
Definitely.
In my limited experience, fixing a problem in post takes at least 20 times as long as doing it right on the set. This ratio may reduce in the future, but I doubt that the principle will be any different.

I have a bunch of Red Giant plugins and have played with the demos for all of the ones relevant to me - here's my opinion (for what it's worth)
1.remove DV artifacts - if you want to render faster, use the script from the book - MB Frames' deartifacter takes longer and you'll be hard-pressed to spot any difference (also, if working with overbrights in 32bpc, I skip this step)
2.optimize the shot - Colorista is my first choice (with a levels effect below it as a guide to exposure). Otherwise I use Color finesse.
3.relight and change object color I use either the script from the book (feathered masks + exposure) or Colorista
4.gradients, diffusions - rarely use those, the scripts in the book work fine - or use looks
5.vignetting - use the script or make your own!
6.color corrections/grading - I use looks or Colorista and a bunch of other effects depending on what's appropriate - that's where the fun is - you get to experiment!
Please remember that these aren't going to make a crappy shot look good though, and that even with a good shot - keeping it subtle is where you need to be (most of the time)
