Nice find. And beautiful. I have access to both the D90 and 5DII if I want for my film, and part of me wants to do it for a couple key shots, but the 30p is killing me. Grak.

It's amazing you can now shoot images this beautiful with a "photographic camera".

You could use the 5D MkII for a shot where you slow down from 30 to 24, for a slight slowmotion effect. I'm betting they do 24P within the year. MkIII maybe?

I think the MkIII already exists.

The fact is, they could deliver 24p via a firmware update if they were so inclined. If they fixed just a few items on this cam, it would be an incredible creative tool.

Stu has some thoughts on the matter, but I dont want to post his screencaps w/o permission. Hang tight.

Here is a tutorial on how to do it:

http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009/05/30/how-to-convert-canon-5dmk2-footage-from-30p-to-24p/

Philip is a talented photographer and a good guy, but he doesnt really shoot ACTION stuff. 30p>24p might work for his beautiful cityscapes and landscapes, but Stu ran into problems with frame interpolation when he processed his "After The Subway" footage using this method. Maybe he'll comment.

Indeed. The more motion you have, the more likely it is that any optical flow re-timing system is going to encounter problems.

Not even getting into the actual combat shots, here's the Compressor method referenced in Philip's tutorial failing on one of the more sedate shots in After The Subway:

http://twitpic.com/6bj0i

Now I'm not saying that you won't occasionally see results from 30-to-24p conversions that look good. The technology is amazing. But while it can work often, it will fail often. And that's not a workflow. It's finger-crossing.

On a more subtle note, I don't think it's acceptable that every frame of a film should be a computer's best guess as to what happened between captured frames. The magic of filmmaking comes in part from capturing and revealing a narrow, selective slice of something resonant that happened in front of the lens. When you do these emotion-interpolated frame rate conversions, you invite a clever computer algorithm to replace your artfully crafted sliver of reality with a best-guess. I feel (and feel free to disagree, I won't bother arguing) that this artificiality accumulates to create a feeling of unphotographic plasticness. Screw that. Didn't you select the 5D because you wanted emotionally resonant imagery? You'd be better off with a true 24p video camera that works with you rather than against you, even if it doesn't give you the convenient crutch of shallow DOF.

I agree and I have never said it is a substitution for actually having 24p. It's a massive pain in the butt, takes forever and the results aren't as great as recording in 24p. But being in PAL and if I am to use my 5dmkII in any professional capacity to cut in with my EX/ Adaptor stuff, then I need the ability to convert to 25p and this is the best way I have been able to do it...so far.
