It's a good codec, I doubt it'll lose much ground, although freeware and open source players might be SOL. It's interesting that this coincides fairly well with Blu-ray getting a good market footing.

Actually I did not get the MIT link from Slashdot. But I did find the reference that you are talking about over there. Had h.264 not gotten the footing in mass online media the way it has, this would not be an issue. Greed, however, always seems to prevail.
