ATI vs Nvidia

Hi everyone!
I've been lurking for quite awhile and really enjoy the forum.

But I had a question about video card compatibility because I've heard that ATI cards have issues
and sometimes aren't best for the stuff we do.

Has anyone here had problems with ATI cards, namely the 4850?

There are almost always problems known, but for MOST applications I think there are only a handful of known failure cases, none of which will likely apply to you.

Personally, my PC wouldn't run at least one version of RedCine with an ATI 2600XT, so I re-converted to an NVIDIA 8800gt. It's just a matter of time until I find another edge-case that makes me switch video cards or manufacturers again.

I wouldn't worry about your video card selection much. On a consumer-grade computer, it's not THAT problematic to change them up occasionally. And to be a little snarky, the most important compatibility issue should be whether your screenwriting program runs Smile

I would suggest looking at the recommended specs for a specific application that you need to run, and run well. Then go with that. It may not work for EVERYTHING you run, so I'd base it off the most important app.

On my photo computer, it would all be based around photoshop. On my editing box, it is based on After Effects followed by Premiere. I may end up running into a 3D app that wont like my video card, but that's fine as long as I can edit and online my film. (Says the guy that doesn't have enough computing power to edit and online his own AVCHD footage. But that is a FUNDS problem.)
