Hi all. Got the book, got the DVX, got the mac and software, just don't know too many people in the Rebel world. Trying to figure out how to use all this crap, but would love to meet and help folks with projects and vice versa. All right then.

Welcome aboard. I'm in Dallas, but occasionally make it down to the nation's capital. (in fact I'll be there this weekend shooting a mock trailer for a buddy's feature). Maybe we'll cross paths sometime.

Hey Attack, welcome to the board. If I were you I'd beg CM to get on his set to learn some things. Maybe he needs some BTS stills or video shot.

If you Austin folks have a source for where all the blues jam sessions are, I'd be very grateful to have it. (I play piano and sing.)
Thanks!

Welcome Attack. Austin - Isn't that where Troublemaker Studios are? |
I've been here for a few months, and have yet to see RR in person. Maybe I need to hang at the Texas Chili Parlor more often...

The Alamo Drafthouse's just sent an email announcing a competition for Austin residents. Since there's a chance this isn't old news and that it's your cup of tea, I thought I'd help get the word out.
Please excuse the huge paste-in dump, but I can't find a relevant link. They don't specify how to submit entries or where to get the tag video, but I'm sure you can work something out.

subject Austin Frenzy!
Hi guys,
So this one isn't an official Filmmaking Frenzy, but the Alamo's favorite mayoral candidate, Brewster McCracken, asked us to help spread the word about his ongoing Your City-Your Vision filmmaking competition. It's happening now, and has a pretty tight turn around time (films are due on April 10), but I've seen what you guys can do in a weekend, so I'm sure that there could be some amazing films from the Frenzy community.
Details are next, but to sweeten the deal further, Tim's offered up $200 in Alamo gift cards to the best film that comes from our community. That's in addition to getting to see your spot aired during The Daily Show and Colbert Report later this month. Here's the scoop, directly from Brewster's site:
The “Your City – Your Vision – Your Ad” competition invites Austinites to articulate their vision for Austin’s future in a 30-second TV spot.
The winner will have their ad aired during the Daily Show and Colbert Report hour on Comedy Central in April.
Local Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez, Richard Linklater, Elizabeth Avellan, along with digital media pioneer Richard Garriott, will join Brewster in selecting the winner.
This is not a “Brewster for Mayor” spot. It is a creative competition. Entries cannot include mentions or visuals of any candidate – including McCracken.
“This election is about unifying our city around a common vision for Austin’s future and making it a reality. I believe we have a shared vision, but we each describe it differently. This competition will create an opportunity for professionals and amateurs alike to capture their vision and share it with the whole city. And having their work viewed and judged by four of Austin’s most accomplished film and digital media pros will be a pretty exciting opportunity for our creative arts community.”
- Brewster McCracken
Competition Details
Timeline
February 23 – Entries Open
April 10 - Submissions Close
April 11-15 – Finalists Selected and Notified
April 16 – Winner Announced
April 20-24 – Winner Aired on Comedy Central (TimeWarner) in the Austin region
Content and Technical Specifications
Entrants must reside in Travis County or adjacent counties. Proof of residency will be required of all finalists.
We intend to air the winning entry on television. As such, all entries must follow all broadcast regulations governing “acceptable” TV content. Entries that contain profanity, nudity, potentially libelous material, or any other unacceptable material, will be disqualified without notification.
This is not a “product” ad competition. Entries that overtly promote products, companies or services will not win. This guideline does not refer to “incidental” promotion (i.e, showing the Dell building, local business signs or other “Austin” scenes that may incidentally promote a business).
Entrants are responsible for obtaining all copyright approval for any content and “model releases” from any person contained in the entry’s audio of video content.
Each entry must be no longer than 25 seconds long, to allow for a 5-second “tag” at the beginning or end of the winning entry.
The campaign will deliver the winning entry to the advertiser in electronic format. As such, each entrant MUST submit their entries electronically, following the specifications below.
* Must be NTSC format
* Must be 25 seconds in length
* Quicktime file (finalists must provide an uncompressed version…see below)
* 720 x 486 aspect ratio
* Lower field first (interlaced)
* Data read no larger than 8 bit
* Embedded Stereo Audio
* Audio must be at least 48KHz
* All graphics must be within safety title zone
The campaign will require an uncompressed digital version ONLY from entrants that are selected as finalists. If such a version cannot be produced for any “finalist,” that entry will be disqualified and another finalist will be selected. (In other words….if you want to win, make sure you can meet these specs.)
