converting 29.97 footage back to 24 frames timeline
I am a perplexed camper now...
I have a 29.97 dv transfer from beta sp tapes (telecine of 16mm film)
I can't afford to go back to the 16mm film right now. But, I need to convert the video footage back to 24fps.
Is there a way to do this in quicktime? or Final Cut Pro? I heard about a REVERSE telecine but I was not sure if you were to do this with the sequence or the files themselves.
And then I got confused with Magic Bullet de-interlacing yadda yadda, the new hd software...
I just want to do this as cheaply as possible....I read in the DV REBEL BOOK more about people that have started with 24p footage (23.9
or video...etc.
can someone remind me what I am missing? or walk me through this process of getting my footage back to 24p? 24 frames per second on the time line? so I can edit at this rate, sync my audio from the DATS at this rate(film speed) not (video speed)
and then I can shoot HVX200 footage 720p (23.9 footage.....this is where I breakdown...what the hell is 23.98 compared to 24fps? and what do I do to solve this issue?
I want to finish on what timeline? 24? or 23.98? I have options for both....
but I have 16mm film that is now DV 29.97, I need to marry it with 720p footage HVX200 that I will soon shoot....
thanks for any help?

I've never done what you're doing, so this is an educated guess.
Assuming when it was converted a 3:2 pull down was added (in FC put the canvas at 100%, and step through the frames at a part with a lot of movement, you should see 3 progressive frames followed by 2 interlaced frames)
what you want to do is "remove the pulldown", Cinema Tools (part of FCS) will do this but it will modify your original files, so work off a copy (!!!). (yes you work off movie clips not the sequence.)
I personally use After Effects to do this (interpret footage, guess 3:2 pulldown).
Your audio should still match up, you are not changing the length (in minutes and seconds) only the number of frames per second.
Sorry, that's all I've got, I've never worked with film, but "help" in FC/Cinema tools should give you more info.

I'm assuming you're using FCP for your edit.
My recommendation is to capture to Apple ProRes HQ as your intermediary codec. Use Compressor to transcode to the same codec using Other Workflows --> Advanced Format Conversions -->Apple Codecs -->Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material (High Quality). You'll want to make a copy and modify it.
Here are some instructions based on HDV 60i conversion to 24p from the Canon HV20. Your workflow should be similar.
There will be some changes based on you specific needs but it should be easy to figure out.

thanks guys....i was wondering though just to ask but instead of PRORES 422 since I am shooting with my hvx200 for the rest of the film, should I not try and make it the DVCPROHD 720p? this is where I get a bit edgy as in the pull down there is no actual 24 only other frame rates....am I missing something too? yikes...
but as far as rendering, does FCP handle PRORES 422 as native versus, the DVCPRO? I thought that if the sequence had the codec it would all be the same....
so that brings me back to 24 and 23.98...isn't that the problem here too?
when I do the 3-2 pulldown does that create a 24 frame file......so what about it ? do you then convert it in compressor? to shift to 23.98 so it can sit on the timeline?
or is ProRes 422 a true 24 timeline?
thanks
