I just watched "The Illusionist." Very cool. But...

The flick is fraught with vignettes. For a period piece like "TI", maybe, but for an action flick?

I notice that "New Vignette" is a selection on the the DRG tool palette. I admit, I'm in the middle of chapter 4, and so haven't reached the part where it's explained why vignettes are cool (assuming that Jeff didn't just add it because he's a vignette freak). Am I going to be convinced or are vignettes weak in the modern film world? What's the draw?

Vignettes are like sounds in the surround channels—they are awesome as long as you don't notice them.

I guess that's the point. I found them rather annoying in "The Illusionist," they were so obvious. Does the Guide elaborate on their use?

On p. 306 I give you my suggestion for which shot in The Green Project might benefit from one.

But remember, I'm a commercial director, and we put vignettes on everything!

whatever freakish qualities there are in creating vignettes, all i did was just make it "push button easy" (read: wrap stu's techniques in a script). hmm, does that make me an enabler? Smile
